The ancient Egyptians wore bone, gold and ivory nail extensions to display their wealth and power. During the Ming Dynasty long nails were considered a status symbol. It said you were upper class, you didn’t have to work manual labor jobs and you lived a life of leisure. By the 1950’s a dentist accidentally invented the acrylic nail whilst using the acrylic powder and a polymer used to make artificial teeth as a substitute for a broken finger nail. Not long after the beauty industry discovered this amazing creation and began creating nail art.
The 1990’s showed long fingernails worn by artists such as Coco from the hit r&b group SWV and rap artists, Salt-n-Pepa. Nails then became flashy and bold not only in length but in colours and designs. The French created the french-tip for professional women, subtle and chic with a rounded or square tip and the 2010’s onward discovered the coffin nail worn popularly by socialite Kim Kardashian. With centuries of nail art behind us, we can believe it will always remain a staple in our self-care regimens.
Nail art is no longer a beauty trend for women, but men as well. Men all around the world can be seen with fresh clean manicures and pedicures and a great amount even sporting fun colours and designs. Saveur decided to drop into a local Barnet, North London, U.K. nail salon called, ‘Posh Nail Art & Beauty’ to discover tips on opening a business and what's trending in the nail beauty industry.
